Improve your Long Game

With winter now set in and crisp mornings calling us to the green, it's essential to remember the hidden danger that exists year-round in Western Australia: UV radiation. Not being able to see or feel the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays may lead us to believe in the cooler months it is less harmful, but UV continues to threaten our skin year-round.

One sunburn every two years triples your chance of developing skin cancer and with 95% of skin cancers being preventable, let’s help members become more aware and protect themselves!

Golfers are particularly vulnerable to UV radiation from the reflective surfaces on golf courses - water, sand traps, and grass. These surfaces intensify UV exposure, even on cloudy days.

Sharing the below information with your members will make a direct impact on preventing skin cancer in the WA community.

Protecting your skin today ensures many more enjoyable rounds of golf in the future. Stay safe and keep swinging with these golfing tips in winter!

  • Wear Sunscreen: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Reapplying every two hours is a must when outdoors, and especially after sweating.
  • Cover Up: Wear long-sleeved shirts or arm protectors, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses to shield your skin and eyes from harmful rays.
  • Seek Shade: Tee off earlier in the day and take breaks in shaded areas whenever possible, especially during peak UV hours.
  • Download the free SunSmart Global UV App: Know the UV index for the times you're outside in the sun. If it’s 3 or above, cover up.
  • Check Your Skin: Perform regular skin checks and consult your GP if you notice any changes or suspicious moles.

As we are an Improve your long game club, we want you to take advantage of the complimentary sunscreen on the 1st and 10th tees!

Cancer Council’s Work range sunscreen is a non-greasy dry touch sunscreen, designed for no dirt or dust to stick and ideal for our golfers to maximise their grip, whilst staying sun-safe on the green.
